In recent years, with the rapid urbanization in China, electricity demand has steadily increased, leading to the widespread use of underground power transmission tunnels. However, challenges have emerged. During operation, cables generate heat, which can pose serious fire hazards and necessitate regular maintenance by staff. Additionally, the information and data related to power transmission need to be relayed via cellular signals to the monitoring room above ground. At depths of ten meters, these underground tunnels become signal dead zones, leaving maintenance personnel unable to communicate with the outside world—a significant safety risk.
Underground Power Transmission Tunnel
To address this issue, the municipal project team in Yangzhou City, Jiangsu Province, reached out to Lintratek to develop a communication coverage solution. The project required reliable cellular signal coverage within the underground power transmission tunnel, allowing management to track the location of maintenance personnel and enabling two-way communication via mobile phones. Furthermore, power transmission data must be relayed through cellular signals to the regional monitoring room.
Underground Power Transmission Tunnel
The project spans 5.2 kilometers, with ventilation shafts connecting each section of the underground power transmission tunnel to the surface, where strong cellular signals are available. Consequently, Lintratek’s technical team opted for high-power commercial mobile signal repeaters instead of fiber optic repeaters to serve as the core of the coverage solution, thereby minimizing costs for the client.
For every 500 meters, the following equipment was installed for signal coverage:
Lintratek kw40 commercial mobile signal repeater
1. One Lintratek KW40 high-power commercial mobile signal repeater
2. One outdoor log-periodic antenna to receive cellular signals
3. Two indoor panel antennas for signal distribution
4. 1/2 feedline and a two-way power splitter
In total, ten sets of equipment were used to fully cover the 5.2-kilometer underground power transmission tunnel. The installation was completed within ten working days, and the project passed all testing and acceptance criteria. The tunnel now has robust signal coverage and is ready for normal operation.
Ensuring Safety and Efficiency:
With Lintratek’s communication coverage project, the underground power transmission tunnel is no longer an information island. Our solution not only enhances communication efficiency but, more importantly, provides a solid safety guarantee for personnel. Every corner of this 5.2-kilometer tunnel is covered by cellular signals, ensuring that every worker’s safety is protected by reliable information.
As a leading manufacturer of mobile signal repeaters, Lintratek understands the critical importance of signal coverage. We are committed to continually improving communication services in underground environments because we believe that without signal, there is no safety—every life deserves our utmost dedication.
